Senior Safety System Design Engineer

Cepton is looking for a qualified Sr. Safety System Engineer to drive safety engineering and development activities for our Lidar products targeted towards ADAS and AV markets. Our ideal candidate is someone with strong electrical engineering, HW and system background & knowledge & experience. Potential candidates should be able to independently drive end-to-end safety design & engineering activities working closely with external consultants and Tier-1 partners for our next generation Lidar product.

Key Role and Responsibilites:


  • Participate in developing LiDAR system and subsystem requirement and specs to meet safety requirements defined by OEM

  • Participate in developing architecture and system/subsystem error budget and tradeoff analysis in order to achieve the best balance between system performance and safety capability

  • Create verification plan and drive system & subsystem verification on safety functionality and marginality

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional leaders to develop and implement a safety strategy, including both standard tools (e.g., hazard analysis, DFMEA, FMEDA, qualitative and quantitative fault tree analysis, ISO 26262 guidelines) and design techniques appropriate for our application

  • Collaborate closely with design engineers and Tier-1 supplier to build the overall safety case for the LiDAR sensor per automotive OEM requirements

  • Lead and support internal and external ISO 26262 efforts, understanding technical details well enough to generate documents and work products required by the ISO 26262 standard

  • Perform detailed systems reliability analyses (FIT rates, probabilistic failure analysis, fault tolerance analysis, etc.)

  • Write detailed safety requirements, including hardware and software requirements

  • Actively participate in product design review, quality, and reliability conversations to ensure that functional safety is a critical consideration in all decisions



Skills & Experience Required:


  • Key knowledge about circuitry theory with good experience on circuit failure mode and analysis

  • Some basic knowledge with standard safety concepts, including but not limited to DFMEA, FMEDA, fault tree analysis, etc

  • Knowledge of ISO 26262 is big plus but not necessary

  • Familiarity with automotive mechanical and electrical system architectures (e.g., ADAS systems) is a big plus but not necessary

  • Basic knowledge of the systems engineering process, hardware design process

  • Proven track record of translating and interpreting requirements from design to production

  • Knowledge and execution of review and release of functional safety content is preferred

  • Experience working with Autonomous Vehicles or other autonomous system and sensors is preferred

  • Reliable and independent work style, highly accountable and responsible for the outputs and working well under pressure.

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in engineering w/ 5+ years of experience in related field
